The Ageless Beauty of Music

image

God’s Thoughts to Me

If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me (Psalm 139:9-10, NLT).

Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness (Psalm 55:6-7, NLT).

Wings of A Dove

image

King David was a songwriter/musician/poet par excellence. Even from boyhood as a shepherd, he composed the most beautiful psalms, singing of the majesty, the grandeur, the excellence and, above all, the love and compassion of His Pappa God.

The God who is not only his Pappa, but also yours and mine.

Were he to be alive in the 18th century, he would have been ranked with a Beethoven. Or, in the 17th century, a Handel who wrote “The Messiah”.

image

In the fraction of time I live and am familiar with, King David, the musician, would have been a favorite of mine along with a Freddy Mercury or a Neil Diamond. In my mind these two guys are incredible musicians!

But King David knew a secret about His Pappa that modern man is totally oblivious to … a secret that seems lost to so many … our total inability to capture the beauty of the Creator of everything, in, well, in about anything.

We have lost this wonder amongst the avenues of rules and programs upon another set of religious rules and programs. We have all but lost the wonder of flying away on the wings of the morning.

imageKing David’s hymnody is filled with hyperbole, trying to capture someting bigger than what his limited mind was capable of, trying to give words to the magnificence of our Heavenly Father. But he knew that words were feeble carriers of such wonder and greatness.

I can almost feel his ardour when he wrote Psalm 139, searching for the biggest of big his mind could fathom to bring glory to his Pappa. “Even if”, shows a bit of his frustration with his human limitations.

image

Psalm 55:6 describes his longing, actually, his hunger, to fly away on the wings of a dove to there where he could forever just be in the Presence of the Love of his life, for he was surrounded by the storms of hatred and violence of his enemies.

So often I share that same desperate longing to just escape to the quiet of the wilderness where it is just my Pappa and me.

My heart yearns with King David’s to saddle up the wings of the morning and gallop away to the ends of the oceans trying to live in the unimaginable, intimate closeness of this Presence.

In his days the ends of the seas must have seemed like the ultimate leap into the unknown for they were still unaware then that the world is round.

image

Oh, the beauty of his love, for trusting his Pappa’s hand to guide him in the darkest of dark should he ever be so overwhelmed by the splendour of his King that he would try to hide.

I think he must have experienced such a deep revelation of his feebleness as a human apart from his God to entertain thoughts of hiding from our Pappa.

Our smallness against all that  He is … all the power and splendour contained in “THE GREAT I AM”, takes my breath away and at times makes me want to hide too, but I have found His right Hand lifting me up in my brokenness, enveloping me in His love.

Even though King David admitted that,”Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, to great for me to understand! (Psalm 139:6), the conclusion he comes to in this ode of admiration, is the overwhelming love of our Pappa!

image

He is our God who knows of all our sorrows and heartache … a Pappa that does not belittle our feeble efforts to bring Him glory … a Pappa who does not laugh at  our volatile emotions of love and admiration … a Pappa who does not consider our pain and suffering as something insignificant.

He is a Pappa who collects all your tears like precious pearls and stores them in a jar marked with your name.

King David found the joy of knowing how to revel and delight in his King’s Presence … the secret of experiencing Him … the secret of Living in His Loving Embrace.

Egyptolidolatry

image

God’s Thoughts to Me

What sorrow awaits those who look to Egypt for help, trusting their horses, chariots, and charioteers and depending on the strength of human armies instead of looking to the Lord, the Holy One of Israel (Isaiah 31:1, NLT).

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15, NLT).

Then Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28, NLT).

The Flesh Pots of Egypt

image

As a child, I always refered to important sounding words I didn’t understand as “big words”. Well, Egyptolidolatry would have seemed larger than life to my little mind.

And there, is a great deception, for apart from the fact that this “big word” is only my brain child, it actually refers to the eternally uselessness of the ways of the world … the “Egypts” through all the ages. The idols man so willingly pays homage to.

image

Looking at ancient Egypt, we see they had at least the common sense, if you could call it that, to worship something bigger and apart from themselves. They were very religious and had a whole plethora of gods and goddesses.

Each one had their own role to play in maintaining peace, stability and harmony accross the land. They even had a god, Nun, who together with a few other like Ben-Ben, were the gods of creation. Nun was the dark waters of chaos.

Looking at the current political, economical and social scene of modern Egypt, we see that the sorrow the prophet Isaiah spoke of so many centuries ago, has finally caught up with the Egyptians.

But another dangerous, monstrous, peculiar Egypt has pitched its tent around the minds and thought processes of the human race; Humanism! This one is a subtle foe … beautiful in appearance … heroic in action … the pulling-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps kind of foe!

image

This is the one who whispered to our first parents that they were able to know what good and evil were apart from our Pappa who alone is good. In other words … they had the ability to be their own gods.

Solomon did say that there is truly nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Am I correct when I come to the conclusion that humanism was birthed by the first lie ever told to the human race by the father of all lies?

According to the Free Dictionary, humanism means, “A system of thought that rejects religious beliefs and centers on humans and their values, capacities and worth.” And it says it all! Man has started to worship himself … not just an Egypt, but the chariots and charioteers as well.

image

Is it any wonder that chaos, darkness, sorrow, decay, destruction and all the rest have taken over in this world, with an evil prince ruling the hearts and minds of those who do not follow our sweet, loving, gentle, kind Lord Jesus, for the whole world lies in the evil one (1 John 5:19).

Even the modern church scene speaks a funny language with words like positive-thinking, self-potential, self-worth, self-this and self-that!

image

But our Lord Jesus, the King of my heart, the Love of my life, said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it (Matthew 16:24-25, NIV).”

This is a mouthful and can be easily misunderstood or misused by religionists to have power over those they want to lord it over.

My translation of this verse goes someting like this, “Mia, stop trying to save yourself, dear one, for you truly don’t have what it takes. Just come to me, for with you nothing is possible, but with me, everything is!! Stop huffing and puffing … striving and trying … chasing your shadow or the wind! It is of no use.”

image

And when we, at some stage of our lives, come to that place where we understand these words of our Lord, we still hear and always will, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28, NIV).”

Dear Ones, let us all run to the One who is able to save us to the utmost. Let us leave our Egypts behind and run into His Loving Embrace!

Much love xx

The Shadow of The King

image

God’s Thoughts to Me

Those who live in the shelter of the most High, will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: “He is my refuge, my place of safety. He is my God and I trust Him” (Psalm 91:1-2, NLT).

For these rules are only shadows of the reality to come. and Christ Himself is that reality. (Colossians 2:17, NLT).

They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven (Hebrews 8:5, NLT).

A Sabbath Rest

image

The apostle Paul had a hard time with the first believers in the epistile to the Hebrews. He needed the patience and endurance of a Job when he wrote the letter to the forever nursing baby believers.

They seemed to be unable and slow to understand the better things in our Lord Jesus and wanted to revert back to their old religious system under the law of Moses. Their minds were still veiled, unable to comprehend that it was all only the shadow of the King!

I have been searching in vain for a long time for the wings of our Pappa. I craved the shelter of His love … the rest of the Shadow of His Presence. I couldn’t understand why I never seemed to be able to find that safe place of refuge, for I was trying my utmost best … yet … not a single step of progress was made. Until … I suffered a severe case of total  burn-out.

image

Did I learn my lesson the first time? No ways! The futile, useless cycle started again when I recovered enough to try again! I was like King Nebuchadnezzar who roamed the fields for 7 years. And just like him, after my time had passed, I looked up to heaven, when my sanity returned (Daniel 4:33).

According to Wikki Answers a shadow is formed when an opaque object blocks the travel of light. Light travels in straight lines and any barrier along its path averts the rays striking the barrier. This forms a region of darkness, shaped like the surface of the object obstructing the light.

The verses from the epistle to the Hebrews became alive to me and I knew that I was still dwelling in the shadow of the Law of religious traditions, ways and efforts. And to me … oh well … it looked like the real deal!

image

What an incredible burden I carried, breaking me down one step at a time. Mix that with my well-meant heroic efforts to impress my Pappa, I was cooking a poisonous brew, just like Snow White’s stepmother. It guarantees to kill with just one bite! And just like that disastrous apple, it all looked so beautiful and delicious … so … just right!

Crying out to Pappa, light dawned from heaven, expelling the darkness clouding my mind and understanding. I have sold my heart to a shadow of our Lord Jesus that was only a shadow, a faint preview of the good things to come.

image

All these traditions, self-effort and THINGS were a barrier blocking the Rays of the Sonshine Pappa lavished upon me. But all I could see was the shadows, resembling the good things we were made to experience when we live our life abiding in the reality from heaven, our Lord Jesus.

Our Pappa promised us that the old system of law observance will cripple us, as it did the Hebrews in Moses’ time. Not Moses nor Joshua were able to lead them into the spiritual place of rest.

But our Pappa prepared another oasis of rest … a place under His wings … a place in the Shadow of His Presence to shelter us against the scorching desert heat of this world (Hebrews 4).

image

Dear Ones, let us cease from all our useless labours … let us not harden our hearts when we hear the gentle voice of Pappa urging us along into that special place of rest … into His Loving Embrace.

Come, let us leave the shadows of futulity behind and enter into the Life of our Lord Jesus … the true Sabbath Rest.

Much love xx

Sticks and Stones

image

God’s Thoughts to Me

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless (James 1:26, NLT).

Let your speech always be gracious, and seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person (Colossians 4:6, ESV).

Killing me Softly with His Words

Roberta Flack’s song, Killing Me Softly, was released in 1973 and has ever since been one of my favorite songs ever.

The song tells the story of a young boy, a singer who could bare your soul with the depth of his words. It is soooo romantic and beautiful beyond words! Have I ever mentioned that I am an incurable romantic?

image

When I saw the Scripture for today, I gasped for breath and immediately went into the fight or flight mode.

I was frightened as memories flooded my heart and I wanted to run … escape to a castle in my mind … a safehouse of pretence. For … I am a survivor of repeated verbal and subsequent emotional abuse.

image

I recall the the old English idiom, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me!”. How totally untrue, a lie from the bottom of the pit of falsehood.

Yes, there are words that can undo you in its beauty like the song of Roberta Flack, but, then, there are those that shred your heart slowly, cruelly until only fragments … tatters of your life remains.

image Yet, it cannot be observed with the naked eye. The invisible bruises of your heart can only be hidden behind a grimace, trying to pass itself off as a smile. But if you look deep enough through the windows of your soul, you might see a little child cowering in a corner … paralyzed with fear … whimpering:

Your cruel words

are a burning fire

viciously consuming

the tender green roots

of a longing

tongues of flames

licking up my will to be

to live to be just me

Your tongue a sword

writing a letter

of naked hatred

creating an identity

of shame

slowly destroying

the longing

the will to be just me

On the other side of the coin, I know that I am not fit to be the judge of the motives or reasons for these horrible actions against me, for I know that in some way or the other not one of us is totally innocent or without blame. We all need a good supply of salt before we talk to anyone!

image We all are the victims of our upbringing and the sins of our fathers. It does us well to pay careful attention and take Paul seriously when he admonishes the religious Jews, “You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse” (Romans 2:1 NLT). Our tongues can cause havoc and irreparable damage without the grace of our God.

image

I am a survivor only because my Pappa took the broken tatters of my life, mended them and brought me into the life of our Lord Jesus … into His Loving Embrace.

He healed my broken heart, wooing me with His love … reminding me again … and again … and again of His endless love, until I was able to believe and receive the Light of a new morning from His Kingdom, dawning in my heart.

Much love xx

The Throne of Grace

Grace 1

God’s Thoughts to Me

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most (Hebrews 4:16, NLT).

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you (James 4:8, NKJV).

Drawing Near or Striving Forward?

The sixteenth century French aristocratic lady, Madame Jean Guyon, remarked centuries ago that prayer alone can bring you into His presence, and keep you there continually.

She wrote in a poem, “There was a period when I chose a time and a place for prayer … but now I seek that constant prayer, in inward stillness…”.

image

Hebrews 4:16 always seemed to me like an unobtainable enigma … a secret of the spiritually mature elite … not a place where I can dwell … at the throne of our Heavenly King. It seemed like the dreams that fairy tales were made of.

I strived endlessly to come into His presence … to this Throne of Magic. I believed it was there that our Pappa God would wave His magic wand and make all life’s problems disappear like early morning mist, including the Fm/CFS.

Grace 3

If it wasn’t for Pappa extending His gracious Hand of mercy, I most propably would still have been striving … totally ignorant of my folly. But common sense prevailed and I realized when it was time to hoist the white flag and decided to investigate the reason for my defeat.

It was not for a lack of trying, just the opposite. I truly desired to live in His presence and I knew it was possible. Pappa saw my heart and knew that my desire to live in Him was truly flamed by the passionate eternal flame of love He had kindled in every human heart.

image

The letter to the Hebrews was written at the time when the Jewish Christians were extremely vulnerable and tempted to revert back to their Judaic religion and to join the cause de libre to overthrow the Roman oppresion.

The traditional Jews also questioned His respectability to be the High Priest since His ancestry was from the tribe of Judah, and not the tribe of Levi, like Aaron. That was the golden rule through all the previous ages.

image

Paul explained that Jesus was not a High Priest according to the wordly, physical order of selection, but of the order of Melchizedek. The two parts of this word give us a clear understanding of this eternal order of the High Priest of Grace.

“Melek” means “king” and “zedek”means “righteousness”. Our Lord was the only person ever who could qualify as the only true High Priest … the only sinless man who could enter into our Pappa’s presence without being consumed by His holiness.

Jesus, the Righteous King and High Priest, opened the way for all believers to be a priesthood in Him with immediate and always available access to our Pappa’s presence.

Grace 6

I knew I was, instead of drawing close into the spiritual life of our Lord, striving in the flesh, carnally trying to enter into Pappa’s presence … and that with dubious motives as well!! Oh, how can I forever be released from my deceitful heart (Jeremiah 17:9)?

Since I had no idea how to draw near to God, I did the only thing that made remotely sense in my predicament! Keep in mind that I was still thinking and reasoning in worldy ways and terms. I cried out to our Lord, asking Him to draw me and to show me how I could experientally enter into His life.

Through  a little book by Madame Guyon, “Short and Easy Method of Prayer”, Pappa taught me how to come into His presence and, best of all, how to stay there where there is always just fullness of joy.

Grace 7

Dear Ones, I want to encourage all to draw close unto our Lord … into His presence … there where there is pleasures for evermore (Psalm 16:11).

Much love

The Slave King

Freedom

God’s Thoughts to Me

But when the right time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent Him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that He could adopt us as His very own children. (Galatians 4:4-5, NLT)

So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up in slavery to the law. (Galatians 5:1, NLT)

Born Free

lions

The 1966 British film, Born Free, tells the story of a real-life couple, George and Joy Adams, who raised the lion cub, Elsa, and then released her into the wilderness of Kenya. When our Pappa God gives us His life through the new spiritual birth into His Kingdom of Light, we become like Elsa … we are born free from the slavery to this world and its ways, especially its extremely deceptive religous ways. Hallelujah!!

An enigma to me has always been the fact that our Savior King was born as a slave. As far as my faulty, limited and worldly human mind could perceive, I could not see that He was a slave to anyone. Yet, Pappa is not a man that He should lie. (Numbers 23:19)

As I was pondering that question in my mind this week, Pappa revealed to my heart the beauty of this divine birth. I don’t think we would ever be able to understand what our Pappa God gave up to become one of us … a slave to the law … a slave to sin … a curse on our behalf.

Yet, He was the only human who ever was able to keep the whole law … lock, stock and barrel. But best of all is His complete fulfillment of the royal Law of Love!

Law

I was under the impression that our Lord had a good advantage over us mere mortals with Him being God and all. Not so, for not once did He walk according to His own ways or in His own power (John 5:17). Not one miracle was performed in His capacity as God. Yes, His whole life was lived in complete trust in our Pappa to be all in and through Him … the way we are supposed to live.

In order to enable us with His indwelling Life of Victory, He walked and lived every single moment of His earthly sojourn completely dependent upon and trusting the power of our Pappa as His only source of spiritual life. He lived from every word that proceeded from His Pappa’s mouth.

Empty Grave

At Lazarus’ grave our Lord Jesus showed us this when He prayed that beautiful, confident prayer, “Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent Me” (John 11:41, NLT).

As we allow our Lord Jesus to live His resurrected life in and through us, we come to realize that He became a slave to fulfill the law … to break its power over us, for we all are slaves to sin and death through our physical birth. It is not an option … it just is the way it is!!

Jesus'n Kruis Being the second Adam, the only man after Adam who failed miserably, who had the ability to choose independance, He victoriously overcame the power of sin and self, completely dependant on His Father. Through His dependant victory, He enabled us and made it possible for us to live in Him, in His life, in His Kingdom of heaven, of love, joy and peace.

He reconciled Himself to the whole world, hoping and desiring that not one of us would be lost, but that we all would come to Him to receive His gift of life and be reconciled to Him.

It came as a shock to me that our heavenly Father does not require or ask our obedience, for He knows that even if we want to obey Him, we truly are incapable of doing so (Romans 7:14). The greatest gift we can ever give our Pappa … actually, the only gift, is our heart, our life and our love … fully convinced that He loves us with an everlasting love, allowing Him to change us from the inside out.

Escape

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. It is our responsibility to stay free and not get tied up again under the yoke of slavery to the law (Galatians 5:1).

Dear Ones, I want to wish you all a blessed God-filled Christmas when we celebrate not only our Savior’s birth, but also the gift He came to bring … a life fully surrendered and reconciled to our Pappa. Let us allow Him to live His victorious, resurrected eternal life in and through us.

Simeon’s Truth

experience-intimacy-with-god

God’s Thoughts to Me

The Child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but He will be a joy to many others. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose Him …. and a sword will pierce your own soul. (Luke 2:34, NLT)

He Never Promised us a Rose Garden

Life has taught me a valuable lesson. Suffering causes one of two things; it either breaks us, or, it draws us deep into the life and arms of our Pappa God.

jesus-crying
The families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre are experiencing suffering beyond comprehension … suffering that makes our Lord Jesus cry. I recall our Lord’s tears of sorrow when He saw the suffering of Martha, Mary and their friends at Lazarus’ grave.
It caused Him so much anger and anguish against the one who only came to steal, to kill and destroy.
As we walk through the pages of the four Gospels, we see how so many of the religious Jews stumbled over the cornerstone of our Heavenly Father’s spiritual temple, our Lord Jesus. Just like Simeon prophesied, they opposed Him. He caused many to fall … they refused to come to Him so that He could give them His eternal Life, the life once forfeited in the Garden of Eden.
myimage.jpeg

Suffering also has another tendency. It causes many to blame their Pappa as the cause of all their woes. Others would rant and rave against our God, whilst hammering their fists against His chest. But He understands our limited human nature.

After all, He created us and knows how our machinery works.

He listens with so much compassion as we ask Him those difficult Martha questions. (John 11:21).

May they know that not one grief-filled sigh or sob will escape their hearts without Him knowing … crying and collecting all their tears.

myimage.jpeg

May He bless these dear folks as they grieve and mourn over their loved ones. Let us ask our Lord Jesus to hold them tight in His Loving Embrace as they pound against His chest.

Let He be the Rock they fall on when their world seems to disintegrate as the sword of suffering pierces their souls.

May they receive mercy not to oppose Him like Simeon has prophesied. Instead, let us beseech our Pappa to draw them closer, into a deeper level of His life and love than ever before.

Amen

Cinnamon, The Fragrance of Love and Peace

1a

God’s Thoughts to Me

Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. (Romans 12:18, NLT)

You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride; you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain. Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with choice fruits, with henna and nard, nard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon. (Song of Songs 4:12-14, NIV)

The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her, for there is no one left to buy their goods. (Revelation 18:11 , NLT)

Cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men. (Revelation 18:13, NIV)

My bed is spread with beautiful blankets, with colored sheets of Egyptian linen. I’ve perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. Come let’s drink our fill of love until morning. Let’s enjoy each other’s caresses. (Proverbs 7:15-18, NLT)

The Scent of a Woman

A while ago a South African artist released a song about the scent of women. The love of his life is captured in the fragrance of a naartjie …. his grandmother hides in the memories of cinnamon ….. the aroma of aniseed searches for lost dreams …. In every fragrance, a woman waits to be discovered.

2
And I recall the most beautiful Ode to Love ever written, the Song of Songs, with the Composer, none other that the Lover of our hearts, our Heavenly Bridegroom. The words He whispers to His Beloved is beautiful to behold and cherish.

Yes, our Heavenly Bridegroom sings a song of love to His Bride …. His Shulamite …. His Lady Ekklesia. He compares her heart to their private garden filled with the most exquisite and delicate aromas of love, the aroma of costly spices: henna, nard, saffron, sweet smelling calamus and cinnamon. All the odours associated with an intimate love relationship …. their intimate spiritual love relationship …. a mingling of hearts in quiet love and peace. Cinnamon is the symbol of His Beloved’s sheer delightfulness. (Song of Songs 4:12-14)

3a
But there is another love affair, another woman, a seductress …. the great harlot. She is called Babylon The Great. She was introduced to the apostle John as being drunk with the blood of God’s holy people …. the Shulamites, all those being witnesses for and who stayed true to our Lord Jesus. (Revelation 17:5-6).

She bought and traded in the worldly commodities of religion and its counterfeit love. We see that the inventory of her purchases included the most costly spices, including cinnamon. Even more frightening is the fact that she traded in the souls of men. Through her counterfeit love, false acceptance and false security, she deceived many dear souls into her commodity of religion!!! (Revelation 18:11)
4

This woman was beautifully dressed in all the finest purple and scarlet linen of this world. She seemed immortal and eternal for she already started her deception in the Garden of Eden.

We find her in the streets of Proverbs where she seductively seduces those without common sense and discernment into her house. She uses the counterfeit fragrance of love, sprinkling her bedding of Egyptian linen with costly spices and cinnamon. She uses all her wiles to make her proposal appealing to the senses of seeing and feeling, provoking lust, drawing them into her deadly religious embrace. (Proverbs 7:16-17).

This woman is proud, blaspheming against the Most High God. She forms alliances with kings of the world … the political, economical and religious kings. Those who commited adultery with her, grew rich because of her extravagant, luxurious lifestyle!
5

But we hear His still, small voice calling us, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins.” (Revelation 18:4, NIV).

This woman is not immortal …. she will be destroyed. The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over the destruction of religion, because no one will then be able to profit any longer from her profanities. (Revelation 18:11)

Coming out of her is a spiritual exodus, an exodus from our slavery to the spiritual Egypt. This is a spiritual journey to Canaan, a journey into the life of our Lord Jesus … a journey into the bedchamber of our King … a journey into His Loving Embrace.

Much love to you XX
